aeolian islands
Sicily's most beautiful volcanoes
Vulcano (island)
the largest tourist destination among the Aeolian Islands
Vulcano island is the largest tourist destination among the Aeolian Islands. The island is famous for its volcanic activity, which has produced many of the island’s attractions. Vulcano Island’s most popular attraction is the active volcano, which last erupted in 2001 and can be seen spewing smoke and ash from its crater. On the island of Vulcano you can also visit many hot springs, including a large one where you can swim.
On the island of Vulcano you can also visit many hot springs, including a large one where you can swim.
The island of Vulcano also has beautiful beaches. One of the most popular beaches of Vulcano, which is located near the village of Funtanamare, is called the Blue Lagoon.
Lipari
the island of celebrities
Lipari is the largest of the 7 islands that make up the Aeolian archipelago, Lipari is also its most developed tourist destination, with a quiet and maintained atmosphere.
Lipari is a popular tourist destination, thanks to its silent plateaus, ideal for trekking, and sheer cliffs from which travelers can admire splendid panoramas. The mountains and rugged coasts of Lipari are lined with unique beaches, wide bays and deep caves. For this reason Lipari is perfect to be explored by boat.
The center of Lipari is dotted with shops, small restaurants and bars. The Aeolian Archeology Museum, inside the ancient Palazzo dei Vescovi, offers a fascinating look at how people lived in this archipelago for 5,000 years before it was rediscovered in the 15th century by Italian explorers.
Stromboli
Il fuoco delle Isole Eolie
Due to its spectacular eruptions, the island has been nicknamed the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean”.
Stromboli is a large volcano that emerges 926 meters above sea level. It is a popular attraction for tourists who go up to the crater at night and watch the eruptions. Otherwise, the eruption can also be admired from a boat.
The island is called “Iddu” (He in Sicilian) by the inhabitants of the Aeolian Islands
Panarea
The smallest island but no less beautiful
Panarea is the smallest and lowest of the Aeolian Islands, it forms a tiny archipelago located between Lipari and Stromboli.
Panarea is a tiny island, just 3 km long and 2 km wide. Wealthy tourists flock here to bask in the sun, while supermodels relax on their yachts, along the coast of Panarea, where mud baths are popular and the black sand beaches attract tourists.
It’s a charming mix of whitewashed houses, blue doors and windows, narrow alleyways and bougainvillea that give it a Mediterranean feel like the islands off Greece.
To get the most out of a trip to Panarea, you need to take a boat tour that showcases the island’s highlights.
The island has few beaches within walking distance, but its stupendous beaches include Cala Junco, one of the most beautiful in the whole Aeolian archipelago. Also noteworthy is Calcara beach: known for the extreme temperatures (reaching 100 degrees Celsius) and for the fumaroles that change color from red to yellow depending on the amount of volcanic gas emitted.
